The Kickstarter has officially launched! We've got some cool digital rewards planned including an exclusive backers-only episode, "Doggo's Fate", featuring pixel art by the one and only Balmsold. As you probably guessed, backers will get to decide the outcome of Doggo's second fight with Killjoy Kaiju. Did Ivy's enchantment make the difference or is it the big game over this time? We also have some physical rewards as part of our stretch goals which can be unlocked simply by helping us spread the word about the campaign.
Of course, we're all about interactivity so during the campaign we'll be running the interactive murder mystery, "A Killer Deal" in the updates section. Backers at any level will be able to vote and Tommy Benoist will be writing and illustrating the story in real time with new chapters published on Mondays and Fridays.
You can find out all the details at https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/popcornsundae/plotquest-an-interactive-animated-web-series the pitch video is also available on YouTube. We hope you'll check it out and consider supporting us as we make a brand new type of animated series.
That's right, the long wait is almost over! We're pleased to announce that on Thursday, May 14th at 7 pm CST Episode 1 of PlotQuest will be released! Even if you were at the pre-release screening at Archon, there'll be plenty new to see. The final episode features an additional minute of animation and a brand new ending.
You're invited to chat with the animators and voice actors at the live premiere on YouTube. We'll be sending out a link in the next few days.
Thank you for sticking with us on this long journey and we hope to see you at the premiere!
We're back with another production update! Animation is coming along nicely. We've got most of the scenes animated and Neko is hard at worked getting them cleaned up and colored. We'll be getting the final vocal tracks soon so we can start the lip-sync process then we'll be ready to go. So stay tuned and in the mean time, enjoy some finished animation from a few of our favorite scenes!
A little while back Allied Artists Music Group hired us to produce animated segments for Rocky Kramer’s "Rock Star" music video. We had a lot of fun creating the “Who Framed Roger Rabbit?”/ “Space Jam” blend of animation and live-action. Now that the video’s out we put together a little behind-the-scenes video on how we did the animation, compositing and VFX for it.
...And here's the full music video!
Neko’s back to doing her tutorials and today she’s showing her technique for creating dynamic pixel animation as seen in Doggo’s Special Attack.
These techniques actually work for any kind of hand-drawn animation: traditional animation, pixel animation, anime, you name it! Although Neko’s using Clip Studio Paint Ex for this tutorial, the process will work with almost any 2d animation software, or no software at all! Most of this will work just as well with pencil and paper (you might miss having an undo button though). ^_^ Whether you’re an animator looking to learn a new trick or two, or you’re just curious about what went into making the Retro RPG Sequence for episode 1, you may wanna check out Neko’s video.
In preparation for the official launch of PlotQuest, we’re going to start releasing at least one video a month (animation previews, behind-the-scenes, tutorials, etc.) These may come out sooner than – or in between – our bi-weekly updates, so if you’d like to stay up-to-date on the latest Popcorn Sundae stuff please subscribe to our channel… or don’t, it’s a free country, you be you!
Just a small update this week - Scenes are advancing to the clean-up and color stage… Here’s one of them! We still need to do sound, but this gives an idea of what the finished show will look like. Onward!

A couple more bits of rough animation from episode 1, plus a little bit of finished animation from the Retro RPG sequence. By the way, Neko will be doing a tutorial on how she animated the special attack and its special effects very soon, so stay tuned for that as well.
We've been keeping plenty busy around here! Josh and Tommy have been cranking out animation for episode 1, Chelsea's been tearing through the backgrounds about as fast as we can give them to her and Taylor's working on the second PlotQuest webcomic. Meanwhile, Neko has been hard at work creating the surprisingly time-consuming Retro RPG sequence. If you'd like to see how that's going she's produced two videos on the subject: This one shows her illustration process in creating the background for the battle screen: https://youtu.be/dhjw2z6TQ-c And this one is the first in her tutorial series on animating pixel art: https://youtu.be/CKYR_EWRyGM
Hope you enjoy and stay tuned for more inside info as our quest for animation glory continues!
As promised, here's a couple of our favorite pieces of rough animation from episode 1. Of course, we've got a LOT more done at this point but hey, don't wanna give too much away all at once! ; )
Neko's also got a process video up of her work on the retro RPG fight scene. https://youtu.be/nojAym-cvPg Hope you enjoy!
Neko’s back with another in her pixel art tutorial series. This time she teaches some techniques for drawing pixel art as she works on a retro RPG-style overworld map for episode 1 of PlotQuest. Although she uses Photoshop to create this particular map the techniques will work in any software you may be using. Neko’s looking to start teaching some other styles of animation and illustration as well. If there’s a particular style or technique you’ve really been wanting to learn please leave a comment and let her know.
As you may have noticed, we’ve gone to updating ever-other week. We’re at a point in production where we really need to just focus on cranking out animation, plus we don’t want to give too much away before the series is even out. ; ) The plan is to update every-other week until Episode 1 comes out, then we’ll go back to weekly updates.
